What Will You Do in a Beginner Pottery Class?
If you're signed up for one of our Beginner Pottery Classes or Wheel Throwing Classes in Ontario, here’s how a typical session might flow:
Arrival & Warm Welcome
We start by showing you around the studio. You’ll meet your instructor and the other students, and we’ll walk you through the safety and cleanliness basics. This is a no-pressure, judgment-free space, so if you’ve never touched clay in your life, you’re in the right place.
Gear Up
What to Wear
- Comfy clothes you can move in
- Closed-toe shoes (clay gets slippery!)
- Hair tied back
- Optional: bring your own apron or hand towel.
Clay Time!
Depending on your class type, you’ll either be:
-
Wheel Throwing – Learning to center, pull, and shape clay on the potter’s wheel (great for bowls, mugs, and planters)
-
Hand Building – Using coils, slabs, and pinch techniques to create sculptural or functional pieces
- Combo – Some of our workshops mix both!
Our instructors guide you every step of the way, offering demos, gentle encouragement, and the occasional clay rescue mission.
Glazing & Firing
If you're in a multi-week course, you’ll return to glaze your piece after its first firing. For one-time classes or drop-ins, we’ll glaze and fire your item for you, and let you know when it’s ready for pickup (usually within 3-4 weeks).
